Excerpt from the issue: “But to those who know her (especially those who know to pronounce her name “WEE-da MIKE-el”), there is no bigger proponent of Kentucky bourbon than the lady herself. Her appreciation of the state’s spirits legacy transcends mere tastes and brands. A pioneer in farm-to-table cooking, Michel views bourbon first as Kentucky’s top agricultural product, a craft begun with Kentucky farmers growing the grain that’s handed off to Kentucky laborers who transform it into a uniquely Bluegrass beverage.”

INGREDIENTS (Serves 2)

  • 1 cup water

  • 1 tea bag, any flavor (orange-scented is especially good)

  • 3 tablespoons sugar

  • 4 large sprigs of mint

  • 3 ounces bourbon

  • ¼ cup fresh orange juice

  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice (about 1 lemon)

  • 2 tablespoons Lillet Blanc (optional)

TO PREPARE:

  1. Combine the water, tea bag, sugar, and two sprigs of the mint in a small saucepan.

  2. Simmer over low heat until the sugar dissolves, stirring occasionally. Remove from the heat and let steep for 10 minutes.

  3. Discard the tea bag and mint and stir in the bourbon, orange juice, lemon juice, and the Lillet.

  4. Pour over ice in two large iced tea glasses and garnish with the remaining two sprigs of mint.
